The Humboldt tragedy: Fifteen dreams shattered when that truck and bus collided. Canadians mourn in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.

Transportation supervisors from Layman share their more than 10 years experiences ranging from accident prevention to charter bus discipline.
1) Charter Bus Inspections — Some charter bus companies would not welcome an inspection of their maintenance facility. That is a clear red flag regarding how reputable their operation is. A good company welcomes the scrutiny of the regulations and bus inspections because they have their equipment functioning at the top safety level, their facility reflects that, and they are diligent about their customers safety.
2) Bus Safety Starts Before Engine Does — The first step to protect passengers and drivers is to run through a Pre-trip Checklist: Windshield wipers; Lights; Emergency equipment (Inspect triangle kits, stretchers, fire blankets, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, seat belt cutters, and any other emergency equipment onboard); Brakes; Bus shocks; Security cameras; Wheelchair securement system; Tires.
3) Keep Back Bus Seats Empty if possible —  most bus crashes happen from the rear of the bus.
4) Be Vigilant in Seating, Discipline — Making sure that passengers are properly seated is a key safety factor.
5) Driver is important — A good bus company must ensure each driver is healthy, rested, trained, and road ready. So he or she will not Succumb to Distraction – and always Staying Focused and Avoiding Distractions. It is critical in operating a coach bus.
6) Be Sure You Can Reach Them — Confirm that the company has a 24-hour emergency dispatch system, with live people on duty who can handle last minute changes, emergencies, or any unforeseen issues that may arise.
7) If all else fails and you still aren’t sure if you’ve made the right choice – give them a call, and then ask for a list of references.
